A quick-thinking neighbour helped to put down a fire in the kitchen of an apartment in St Julian's yesterday.

The apartment, in Haven Lodge, was occupied by a couple on holiday and their child.

The neighbour, armed with a fire extinguisher, said he rushed to their assistance and managed to control the blaze with the help of other neighbours.

Two fire engines were sent to the site, and police evacuated the block temporarily.
