The old saluting battery at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta has been given an artistic and colourful look with a collection of tondos - circular paintings by Gabriel Caruana.

The paintings form part of Cityspaces, a festival of art organised by the YMCA to raise funds to finance the revamping of a house for the homeless in Valletta that would take up to 44 persons.

The YMCA estimates the revamped house would mean a recurrent annual expenditure of Lm39,000.

Contacted, Mr Caruana said: "When the YMCA asked me to participate in Cityspaces, the Beatles song that called for the removal of guns to be replaced by flowers came to mind and I thought the old saluting battery would be an excellent place to exhibit my tondos".
