In the current debate about EU membership we are always being told that where our Christian values are concerned it is only up to us to change laws concerning such matters as divorce, abortion, homosexual marriages, etc.

However, it is undeniable .that if we do join the EU we shall be in a club where a large number of members hold values which are diametrically opposed to those that the majority of the Maltese hold and cherish. What truly lies behind the European Parliament's resolution for abortion to be made legal, safe and accessible, and for the easy access to contraceptives, including the 'morning after' pill?

Why bother to pass this resolution when nearly all EU countries have already legalised abortion? Is it perhaps envisaged that in the near or distant future abortion will be enshrined as a human right in all EU member states?

Those in favour of EU membership emphasise only its economic advantages for us, forgetting that "man does not live by bread alone". Can they guarantee that after membership our money will never be used to actively promote abortion and other non-Christian practices?

It is absolutely foolish to believe that five or six members will have any say in a parliament in which there are hundreds of members belonging to countries which a]ready have successfully done away with those values which the Maltese have held on to so tenaciously for so long.
