Last Saturday, the Malta Mountain Bike Association organised the first qualifying race for the Barilla MTB Cross Country Summer Cup 2002 at Mizieb.

The race proved to be very demanding, mainly due to the heat and dry terrain. The rhythm was very fast though and the race was tightly fought out between Etienne Bonello (Team NoFear) and emerging talent Manuel Micallef (Team Magri Cycles & Spares).

Bonello's experienced prevailed however. He finished first in 1:21.13 while Micallef was a close second, just 16 seconds slower. John Zammit (Team Shaft/Adidas Eyewear) was third overall.

Keith Mallia won the Sport Category. He finished first ahead of Kevin Muscat. Joseph Formosa placed third despite an injury following a bad crash early in the opening lap.

The second race of the Cross Country Summer Cup 2002 will take place on the Saturday, July 27 at Delimara.
