There is an EU law that requires the phasing out of leaded petrol because of the environmental harm it causes. Over the past decade, all newly manufactured use unleaded petrol. Leaded petrol is being phased out in all EU countries, remaining only for old (vintage) cars.
On this point, Malta first sought a transitional period until 2006. However, in 2001, the Maltese government announced that leaded petrol will be phased out by 2003. Cars that use leaded petrol will be able to use unleaded petrol mixed with an additive at the petrol station.
