I refer to the parliamentary report (June 25) to make the following clarification on behalf of the Malta Standards Authority.

The report in question referred to three separate functions which are incumbent on the MSA: testing, market surveillance and consultation.

Nevertheless, MSA is neither responsible for testing nor for market surveillance.

The MSA was responsible for the setting up of the National Laboratory. In January 2000 the MSA relinquished its duties to a limited liability company when the Malta National Laboratory plc. was created.

This company branched out of the MSA and hence nowadays the MSA is no longer responsible for testing.

Moreover, the MSA is not responsible for market surveillance. A separate unit within the ministry of economic services coordinates market surveillance activities.

The mandates of the MSA are established under the Malta Standards Authority Act and the functions which MSA is required to carry out are consultative and regulatory.

While hoping that this explanation clarifies the mandates of the MSA, in case of any query, readers may contact the MSA on 2124 2420 or visit the website http://www.msa.org.mt.
