Speaking to government workers, Tony Zarb, general secretary of the General Workers' Union, referred to the Freeport court case against the Union Haddiema Maghqudin after the UHM took industrial action in 1998 against the government when hefty increases in electricity and water tariffs were announced in the budget.

The Freeport Corporation had also requested the court to award it financial damages. According to the request these damages exceeded Lm1 million.

Had the UHM lost that case, it would have been wiped out from the trade union scene.

In those days, the UHM was only supported by other independent trade unions affiliated in the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions, while the GWU remained on the sidelines, like Emperor Nero watching Rome burning.

The GWU must tell the whole truth because only the truth will bring about genuine reconciliation.
