Parents packed the hall of St Joseph School, Sliema, on Prize Day not just to see their children awarded prizes for their efforts but also to be entertained by an outstanding performance by the students called The European Market.

The play had won first prize for the school in a national competition for schools in honour of the European Year of Languages organised by the Malta-EU Information Centre (MIC) last year.

The aim of the play was to show how knowledge of different languages brings people together and thus breaks barriers. The languages in focus were Maltese, English, French, Italian and Spanish. The girls spoke the five languages throughout the play and performed dances typical of every country while showing off traditional costumes and tasting culinary delights of each country.

Various troupes of dancers entertained the audience to Spanish flamenco, the Maltija, the Italian tarantella and French can-can. The choir girls also sang Eros Ramazzotti's Terra promessa, while the Beatles impersonators stole the show.
