Man, 59, dies while swimming

A 59-year-old Sliema man died while he was swimming at Pembroke Ranges yesterday evening, police said.

Police said the man's friend, who was accompanying him for a swim, spotted him motionless face up in the water.

Armed forces personnel were called to the scene and pulled the dead man out of the water, where he was examined by a doctor from the hospital's emergency department.

The man had no signs of violence.

Duty magistrate Joseph Cassar appointed various experts to help in the inquiry.

St Julian's police are investigating.
