The General Workers Union has asked the Water Services Corporation to supply it with information about allegations made by WSC chairman Michael Falzon that a number of workers were acting beyond the union's directives.

The union and the corporation are in dispute over the collective agreement which expired in December 2000.

Mr Falzon had told a press conference on Tuesday that some of the corporation's workers were unilaterally taking unofficial action that was not covered by the directives.

He said employees had claimed more than once that they had not located water overflows reported by residents.

In a letter, the GWU's public services section asked the corporation to point out the cases in which workers were going beyond directives, so that if the allegations proved to be true the union would take action in their regard.

The section gave the chairman six days to answer the letter.

The union also called for the dispute to be resolved around a negotiating table instead of through an industrial tribunal.
