I refer to an item in the On the Dot column (June 17) referring to the situation at Triq il-Htajriet in Mosta. Apart from this road, there are several others at Mosta which are also dust and mud; i.e. there is no road but through usage the surface has somewhat hardened.
To name some in our derelict Ta' Mliet area I mention Triq il-Barjol, Triq l-Alwetta and part of Triq il-Waqqafa. Formation of fresh roads is the central government's duty. We pay our tax dues as any other law-abiding citizens, and we should at least be treated as equal to other citizens who have had their roads done.
Land at Mosta is scarce and investors prefer to hold on to it undeveloped as it increases in value. Are we to be held at the mercy of these developers/investors? Can the roads department enlighten us as to when these promised minor roads are scheduled to be done? Is it not possible to have the street pavements done to have something level to walk on? So far as I am aware other services are all in place.
Apart from these unsurfaced roads, the state of the Ta' Mliet area is indeed shameful, with potholes everywhere. Consideration should also be given to widen the upper part of Mill Street, which has become so heavily used though it is narrow. This road leads to Mosta cemetery and it is hazardous for those who dare walk its upper part, which is also without a pavement and has the rubble wall collapsing.
Incidentally there is also a two-inch water main on the surface of this road which apparently was placed many years ago as a temporary measure to help the water situation. Perhaps now this is no longer required.
