Labour MP Joseph Cuschieri said yesterday that the Auditor General should investigate how the Ministry of Justice and the Arts in 1995 had transferred Lm60,000 to an architect for upgrading works at the pitch of San Giljan waterpolo club when no works had been carried out.
Mr Cuschieri said in parliament that the minister of the time, Dr Michael Refalo, had argued that had the funds allocated for the upgrading of the pitch not been transferred, they would have been lost.
The then president of the club, who was now mayor of St Julian's, had refused to assume responsibility for the funds and they were therefore transferred to an architect indicated by the club.
The procedure that had been followed was strange to say the least, Mr Cuschieri said, and the minister should give a detailed explanation, not least because no works had been done at the club to date.
The matter, he said, should also be investigated by the Auditor-General because public funds were involved.
