A total of 320 rusty metal drums were collected from the limits of Siggiewi by employees of the Manufacturing and Services Department and from the Parks and Landscape Conservation Section in the drive by the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure to remove such containers and other objects that stand for walls in rural areas.
The drums were collected on Thursday and Friday. And employees started collecting other drums in the limits of Zabbar yesterday.
The Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure pointed out that Legal Notice 160/97 enables the government to remove metal drums and other objects at the owner's expense after six weeks from the issue of a notice. Land owners or occupiers of land where drums and other objects are being used instead of rubble walls, are responsible for the conservation of the rubble walls and are obliged by law to remove these alien objects.
But before measures are taken the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure is providing assistance for the removal of the metal drums from every locality.
Between yesterday and July 14 and then between July 29 and August 14 officers from the Works Division will be working from Zabbar and Mgarr respectively to assist land owners or occupants to meet these obligations.
The Parks and Landscape Conservation Section is urging land owners or occupants to phone from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and noon on 2299 7733 to make the necessary arrangements.
