President Guido de Marco took a break in his busy schedule recently to meet Patricia Salomone, who heads the fund-raising committee of Rotary Club La Valette Malta, to donate his necktie to the "Untied Rotarians" campaign.

Thus, what began on April 7 almost as a joke among fellow Rotarians, when International President Richard D. King donated his necktie and a 50-dollar bill to start the campaign rolling, has snowballed into a nation-wide campaign of solidarity with Dar il-Kaptan.

The First Citizen of Malta having donated his necktie, it is now hoped that this afternoon from 6.30 onwards, hundreds of strollers along the newly refurbished Sliema seafront will make cash donations for the paving of the playground at Dar il-Kaptan and add their personal necktie to the festoon stretched along the new railings between Il-Fortizza and It-Torri, one and a half kilometres of Maltese solidarity!

Guevska at Tempra Museum

The Daniela Guevska exhibition at the Tempra Museum in Mgarr, inaugurated on June 13, will remain open until September 28. This most interesting Bulgarian artist holds degrees in theology and psychology and will lecture during the summer Tempra Academy on August 21 in Malta on the "Personification of Wisdom". She also presented two works of art to the museum.

The international president of the Grolla d'Oro di Treviso art competition, Dame Françoise Tempra, who curated the show, took advantage of the event to present the awards to various Maltese artists and artists residing in Malta, assisted by the dynamic Mgarr mayor Paul Vella (voluntarily directing and actually helping in an amazing construction underneath the church square), his wife Simone, Mina Tempra and councillor Michael Farrugia.

The evening as usual progressed with a pizza and wine evening in the gardens of Villa Tempra.

Appreciation: Edmond W. Micallef

by Ms Vikki Micallef of San Gwann

The more I came to know my father-in-law, the better I understood the true meaning of the word "gentleman". For there can be no other way to describe Eddie Micallef.

To many he was a man of integrity endowed with a keen sense of discipline and propriety as well as a delightful sense of humour and word play; respectful of his colleagues, diligent in his work, dependable and considerate when asked for advice, knowledgeable yet unpretentious.

To us he was a devoted husband, a dedicated father and a doting nannu. Not one to seek the limelight, he was nevertheless the central figure in our family. Throughout his life he was a shining example, quietly guiding but never overbearing, not always approving but forever supportive. His faith in God was reflected in his outlook on life and he was a source of inspiration to us all.

Happiest when surrounded by his family, he would watch us as we discussed or laughed together, joining in with his valuable contributions and side-splitting wisecracks.

To me he was all the above and more. I feel honoured that he was my husband's father and our children's nannu for he was a good man, wonderful within and without. He was a true gentleman and I am richer for having known him.

May God grant him eternal rest.

Appreciation: Antoine Ciappara

by Mr John Bezzina of Mgarr

Destiny has played a very dirty trick on 28-year-old Antoine Ciappara (known as ic-Chappey), whose death has left a huge void in our hearts. Early on June 19 I was dumbfounded to hear that Antoine had a fatal accident at Gnejna with his dinghy the day before.

Antoine was a very good-natured person. He was charismatic, always ready to help others, highly skilled and creative, and committed to fulfilling whatever he set out to do.

Together with my son Adrian he won numerous shields and trophies in the heyday of offroading competitions in Malta. He was truly gutsy and adventurous. He never hesitated to forfeit a chance of winning a competition to help fellow strugglers who met difficulties during offroad events.

Even at his place of work at the Floriana police garage, he was always ready to perform his duties to the best of his abilities and to help out fellow workers and officers, going beyond the call of duty.

May the Good Lord console his mother Carmen and father Philip, his sister Glorianne and her husband, as well as his fiancée Vicky and her family.
