How would you like a free flight this summer just for putting in a few hours of volunteer work during July?
YMCA Valletta are offering the possibility of a free flight to those willing to give up a few hours of their time for a good cause during the YMCA summer festival in July.
For the sixth year running, YMCA is holding the Valletta festival throughout July in aid of the homeless.
YMCA has once again come up with a number of creative ideas for this year's festival, which will transform Valletta from a traditionally quiet city to a vibrant and lively one.
The events taking place this year vary from cultural, musical, and artistic activities, from film nights in Great Siege Square to a feast with a nostalgic mediaeval twist to theatrical and musical performances.
The YMCA deals with the problems of the homeless and also caters for victims of domestic violence, among others.
The main aim of the festival is to collect money to provide shelter for the estimated 300 homeless people in Malta.
In order to achieve this goal YMCA requires the help of as many volunteers as possible.
Volunteers are required to encourage people either to become YMCA members or to sponsor a bed for a homeless person.
Membership costs Lm5, whereas sponsoring a bed costs just Lm1 a month for a year.
Cash will not be handled directly by the volunteers since the fees will be taken from the individuals' bank account via direct debit.
Volunteering hours are flexible and vary greatly, allowing one to choose the hours most suited to one's daily schedule - helpers are required throughout July, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 4 to 7 p.m.
The incentive for volunteers is a free flight at the end of the festival for those who reach a specified target in memberships or bed sponsors.
The destination has not been established as yet.
