William Chetcuti maintained his impressive shooting standard while dominating the last Double Trap selection shoot for July's Commonwealth Games at the Bidnija ranges last weekend.

He smashed 137 points in the 150-clay competition followed by Philip Busuttil, 122, and Godfrey Ciangura, 120. Chetcuti and Ciangura will be travelling to Manchester next month to face the other Double Trap shooters from the Commonwealth countries.

The last Skeet selection shoot, also for the Commonwealth Games, was held on two days last week. Seventy-five clays were shot on Saturday and the other 50, plus barrage, were reserved for Sunday.

Paul Vella confirmed his place as the foremost skeet shooter on the island when he won the competition with ease, shooting an MQS score in the process.

Meanwhile, the Grand Prix trap competition was held at Qormi. The excellent visibility helped competitors to shoot their peak scores.

Straights were hit by veteran Emmanuel Attard, Frans Pace, John Marmara, Alfred Brincat, Aldo Falzon, Noel Attard, Joe Attard and Frank Scorfna. Frans Bugeja even smashed a remarkable 50 straight.

Although 14 shooters eclipsed the 112 MQS mark, Noel Attard and Pace went into the final on an excellent score of 121, dropping only four clays on the two days. The former, however, maintained his touch to earn the title of Grand Prix champion 2002.

Overall: 1. N. Attard 144; 2. J. Marmara 142; 3. F. Bugeja 141; 4. A. Brincat 140; 5. F. Pace 140; 6. F. Scorfna 139.
