The resources and infrastructure ministry is clamping down on the illegal use of oil drums and other objects on rubble walls as they are spoiling the countryside environment.

As from this month, notices are being issued to owners or occupants of land asking them to remove the steel drums and other objects, the ministry said.

Legal Notice 160/97 enables the government to remove such objects at the owner's or occupant's expense after six weeks from the issue of this notice.

Land owners or occupiers are responsible for the conservation of rubble walls and are obliged by law to remove such alien objects.

The ministry's works division is providing assistance for the removal of steel drums from every locality.

Between July 1 and 14 and between July 29 and August 14 August, officers from the division will be working from Zabbar and Mgarr respectively to assist land owners or occupants to meet their obligations.

The parks and landscape conservation section urged land owners or occupants to phone from Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and noon on tel. 2299 7733 to make the necessary arrangements.
