Suspended jail term, driving ban for causing passenger's death

A Gozitan driver was yesterday given a two-year jail term suspended for four years and was banned from driving for a year for causing the death of his passenger in a car accident in February, 1994.

Godwin Cardona was found guilty of causing the accident somewhere between Qala and Victoria on February 6, 1994, which led to the death of his passenger, George Cremona of Victoria.

He was also found guilty of speeding and driving dangerously.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti heard how Cardona and Cremona left a discotheque and decided to go for a drive to Qala. The accident happened on their way back to Victoria when the car crashed into a wall and overturned.

The magistrate ruled the accident had taken place because Cardona was speeding. He noted that this was Cardona's first offence but remarked he had to take a serious view of it because fatal accidents were becoming something of a common occurrence these days.

Police Inspector Paul Vassallo prosecuted.
