The Malta Olympic Committee, in collaboration with the Malta Amateur Athletics Association, is holding the annual Olympic Day Run on Saturday to promote mass sport.

The run will start at City Gate, Valletta at 6.30 p.m. passing via Floriana to Pietà, Msida Seafront, Ta' Xbiex Seafront, Gzira/Sliema Strand, Tigné and finishing near the Tower Palace Hotel in Sliema.

Those wishing to take part in shorter runs may join along at Msida (near the church), Gzira (near Manoel Island) and Sliema (Tigné near NSTS).

All participants will receive a signed certificate by the president of the International Olympic Committee.

Each year, between June 17 and 24, national Olympic committees all over the world organise a celebration to mark the foundation in Paris of the International Olympic Committee on June 23, 1894.

On this occasion, Pierre de Coubertin obtained the re-establishment of the Olympic Games.

The World Olympic Day celebration was made an annual event in the Olympic Movement at the 42nd IOC Session in January 1948.

In order to encourage all NOCs to commemorate Olympic Day, the Sport for All Commission of the IOC launched the concept of the "Olympic Day Run".

Forty-five NOCs held the first run in 1987. In 1999, this number had grown to 170 out of the 199 NOCs recognised by the IOC.
