The implementation of the solid waste management strategy, henceforth known as Progett Skart, began last October and was launched as part of Green Week 2002.
The Progett Skart team, which was appointed by the Waste Management and Sustainable Initiatives Unit at the Works Division, is currently working hard with the FOI, liaising closely with the FOI Environment Committee, headed by FOI council member Godwin C. Micallef.
Early this year, the FOI had organised a two-day visit to Malta for John Cackett, a British environmental consultant specialising in waste oil recovery and recycling. During his busy schedule of meetings, Mr Cackett met Paul Mifsud, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure, visited two enterprises that are directly involved in oil recycling and bio-diesel generating processes, namely Waste Oil Company Ltd and Edible Oil Refining Company Ltd, and addressed a seminar entitled "The Collection and Recycling of Waste Oils".
Through this visit, which was made possible thanks to the British High Commission in Malta, the FOI through its Environment Committee was instrumental in stimulating discussion and interest on issues relating to the local recycling of waste oils and production of biodiesels in Malta.
