Alternattiva Demokratika - the Green Party yesterday demanded to be involved in the discussions on changes to the electoral laws being held by the PN and the MLP.

"The electoral law is not the personal property of the MLP and PN. All political parties should have a say in the discussions," secretary general Stephen Cachia said.

He was reacting to the private members' bill presented in parliament by the Labour Party.

"AD is shocked by the MLP proposals in which it is insisting on trying to control the movements abroad of Maltese citizens, either through the use of embarkation cards or some new system. AD insists that this is unacceptable in any modern democracy.

"The MLP position on voting rights for Maltese living abroad is also a very limited proposal, which is discriminatory in its intention since it excludes a number of categories of Maltese citizens living abroad. The parties in parliament should seize the occasion to extend the right to vote to every Maltese citizen instead of coming up with discriminatory proposals."
