World Cup on course for goals record

The co-hosted World Cup in South Korea and Japan was on course for a goals record as the first round group stage finished yesterday.

After 48 matches, a total of 130 goals had been scored, three more than at the same stage of the tournament in France four years ago.

In those finals, the first with 32 teams taking part, a record of 171 goals was eventually set. If 42 goals or more are scored in the last 16 matches of this tournament, a record will be set.
