US Ambassador Anthony Gioia has donated a collection of books known as the Library of America Collection to Education Minister Louis Galea for use at the university.
The collection includes about 100 books by the most prestigious American writers in a wide variety of topics including literature, politics, history, journalism and poetry.
The books represent over two centuries of American writing beginning with the writings of George Washington through to the best of journalists covering the war in Vietnam.
The University of Malta was one of only a few universities that received the collection.
Some 100 universities and institutions were nominated by American embassies around the world and only a few were actually awarded the series.
The Library of America has been described as one of the boldest and biggest publishing ventures in recent years.
It is a non-profit publishing company that was created to preserve the best of American writing and make it accessible to readers around the world.
It seeks to restore and pass on to future generations the literary heritage of the United States.
The collection also includes the works of famous writers as Mark Twain, Earnest Hemingway, and Henry James.
The Library of American collection will be on display at the University of Malta library in the new books section.
