There are three occasions when you can see a traffic police officer: with the presidential carcade; with the foreign dignitaries (mainly EU representatives); and dishing out motoring fines.

In many countries, the police force has gone through an effective effort to become citizen friendly, rather than just serving the interests of the state.

It is high time that the new police leadership promote a new identity for the police corps so that citizens in general may feel the change in leadership as well as get something in return for the high taxes we pay.

Solving the morning traffic jams in our main artery roads could be a simple first step in the right direction.

Traffic police should tour these roads in order to smooth traffic blockage. Putting police on the roads - and away from the law courts and desks - should be a first priority.

A simple economic model would prove that such an initiative would save thousands of liri and increase our productivity.
