Linear expressions at Bay Street

Young artists Clayton Tonna and Victoria Debattista, currently studying art under Matthew Cassar, recently exhibited their most recent works at Bay Street's Artisan Market.

Themed "Linear Expressions", their works represent a thorough exercise, which has been undertaken by both students in a bid to explore the geometric patterns found in elements and figures.

Following the completion of the project, aimed at helping both artists develop a better awareness of line within form, their tutor encouraged them to exhibit their works.

Clayton is currently following a four-year diploma course at the Institute of Art and Design (MCAST). Victoria loves to experiment with different media, namely oils, pastels, acrylics and pen and ink.

Venetian backdrop to yachting guide world premiere launch

The Casinò di Venezia in Malta, housed in the magnificent 17th century Galley Captain's Palace and overlooking the Cottonera Waterfront Marina, recently presented a touch of Venice at the world premiere launch of The Mediterranean Yacht Planners Guide, which was hosted at the Bucintoro Restaurant.

Published by Aegean Exhibitions & Publications of the UK, the guide features special portfolio reports on the major yachting areas of the Mediterranean, including Malta, as well as a worldwide comprehensive yachting directory.

The Malta launch, organised by the UK publishers together with Wilfred Sultana, who also produced the Malta report in the guide, was held under the auspices of Tourism Minister Michael Refalo and Transport and Communications Minister Censu Galea.

With the co-operation of the Malta Tourism Authority, Agi Evangelides, managing director of Aegean Exhibitions & Publications, was present for the launch.

Following the launch, the occasion evolved into a pleasant 'yachtsmen's reunion' with the presence of various personalities from the local yachting trade and the sailing community.

Saint-Tropez to Malta

Nothing beats the elegance and majesty of clasic sailing yachts slipping out of their safe haven - in this case Saint-Tropez - to meet the challenge of the open seas.

This was the backdrop to the start of the first Saint Tropez-Malta Regatta, an initiative of M. Henri-Christian Schroeder, Commodore of the Mare Nostrum Sailing Club, and Professor Salvino Busuttil, Malta's Ambassador to France, in co-operation with the Royal Malta Yacht Club.

Before setting sail from France, on May 21, participants contending the Bailli de Suffren trophy had their boats blessed by Fr Michael Hayes, a Welshman and the town's parish priest.

Before the start of the race, several events took place. A dinner, hosted by Saint Tropez mayor, Dr Jean-Michel Couve, was preceded by a DVD presentation on Malta, introduced by Dominic Micallef, director of MTA Paris.

Speeches were made by the mayor, Ambassador Salvino Busuttil, and Count Charles de Montemart representing the Order of Malta, which also held an exhibition on the Knights at the Citadel of Saint Tropez.

At the cultural centre of the town hall, the Ambassador inaugurated a vernissage of works on Malta by Luciano Micallef whose paintings were very much appreciated.

Mme Mouna Ayoub, an old friend of Professor Busuttil, entertained to lunch on her sumptuous yacht Phocea (a frequent visitor to Malta) the Ambassador, Baron and Baroness D'Amico Inguanez and Mr Micallef. The Phocea then led the boats out of the harbour and saw them off to Malta.

Personalities visiting Saint-Tropez for the occasion included Anton Valentino, president of the Malta Sailing Federation, and Mrs Valentino, Prince Faisal Bay, Princess Anne of the Two Sicilies and a contingent from the Knights of Malta and from the international racing world.

On a historical note, Bailli Pierre-Andrè de Suffren was Seigneur de Saint Tropez, vice-admiral under Louis XVI and Captain-General of the fleet of the Order of St John.

Together after 50 years

It was a memorable reunion. A success story. Fifty years on, those with strong connections with Hamrun Eagles football team felt a huge nostalgia and decided to get together.

There were unforgettable scenes at Elia Borg Bonaci in Hamrun, where around 85 people gathered and enjoyed themselves tremendously.

Childhood memories were revived and those who attended remembered the good old times when as young boys they ran about in the streets and formed part of the U-16 football team competition and then 'graduated' as members of Hamrun Spartans. A few even played with the Malta XI.

Not only was this reunion special but it was exceptional because it brought together people from the four winds - Effie Borg from the UK, Paul Buttigieg from Canada, George Farrugia of Hawaii, and the Australian contingent: Lawrence Dimech, Harry Bugeja and Eddie Frendo.

Although preparations for this reunion were very much a joint effort, Roland Magri and John Muscat, of Malta, worked extra hard to make this reunion the big success it turned out to be.

Much of the reunion's success is owed to Farsons, Carabott Jewellers, Elia Borg Bonaci and individuals like Antoine Attard and Harry Zammit Cordina who lent a helping hand.

President Guido de Marco, who attended the reunion, previously hosted the guests at the Palace in Valletta. Also present were the president of Hamrun Spartans FC, Victor Tedesco, together with committee members and members of the Hamrun Nursery.

In a speech for the occasion, Lawrence Dimech spoke about the Eagles name and how very much alive it still was, even in NSW, where it was adopted by Parramatta Melita Eagles. He also remembered the time when, together with Leli Mifsud, he emigrated to Australia and formed Malta Eagles FC, which then amalgamated with Melita FC. The famous club which belongs to the Maltese in Australia - Melita Eagles - was subsequently created.

Professor de Marco then presented a remembrance certificate to around 30 former players and committee members of Hamrun Eagles. Among these were George Spiteri, aged 82, a resident at St Vincent de Paul Residence, and founder Leli Mifsud.

An honour was also awarded to Joe Mifsud Matrenza, former teacher and sports master at Hamrun Boys Primary School. There was also an exchange of gifts between Hamrun Spartans and Parramatta Melita Eagles FCs.

The President talked about the strong friendship which existed in the village of Hamrun and how this reunion managed to bring even closer the old 'buddies' of Hamrun.

A big screen presentation of old photos, ably edited by Josianne Cardona (Lafoy), also took place. There was also an exhibition of photos featuring Fifties teams of Hamrun Eagles. A cake was also cut.

A fenkata, which followed in Mgarr, brought to an end a unique experience, lived by people who once contributed immensely to sports in Hamrun, and who met after 50 long years.

Italy's Republic Day reception

The annual reception hosted by the Italian Embassy to celebrate Italy's National Day - the Festa della Repubblica, marking the proclamation of the Republic on June 2, 1946 - this year had a special significance for Dr Paolo Scartozzoni, the chargé d'affaires, who hosted it.

For Dr Scartozzoni and his German-born wife this was the last Italian National Day reception he was attending in Malta, which they will be leaving shortly at the end of his tour of duty.

The reception was held last Monday at the Dragonara Reef Club, by the Olympic-size pool, offering a very pleasant open-air venue complemented by a mouth-watering array of Italian cheeses and pasta and - as if to symbolise the strong relations between the two countries - Maltese sweets such as kannoli (which have their origins in nearby Sicily, anyway), honey-rings and even a rather out of season kwarezimal, washed down with red and white wine (Italian, of course), beer and other drinks.

The guests were led by the President of the Republic and Mrs de Marco, and included the Prime Minister, Dr Fenech Adami, Arch-bishop Mercieca, Cabinet ministers, members of the diplomatic corps led by the Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr Luigi Conti, former Presidents Censu Tabone and Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and their spouses, MPs, members of the Italian military mission and of the Italian community in Malta, and numerous other guests.

In a brief speech in English, Dr Scartozzoni said that in the four years he has been here, relations between Italy and Malta had continue to grow "in quantity and in quality", typified by the frequent visits paid by ministers and senior officials of the two countries.

The bilateral relationship was also strengthened by the two countries' common European and Mediterran-ean vocation, and in view of Malta's current negotiations for EU membership.

Dr Scartozzoni said that the closeness of Italo-Maltese relations could also be seen by the fact that Malta was the country where Italian was most widely spoken and understood outside Italy.

In proposing a toast to President de Marco, Dr Scartozzoni ended with the words Viva Malta! Viva l-Italja!

President de Marco, said he was replying in Italian to underscore Dr Scartozzoni's last remark, adding that Italian had contributed substantially to the Romance element in Maltese. He also highlighted Malta's long-standing, historical and geographical closeness to Italy, but the two countries also shared a common future. Both countries had a stake in the stability of the Mediterranean and the development of Europe.

He ended by proposing a toast to relations between Italy and Malta, after which the two national anthems were played.
