The man, 41, was working in Malta and living in Gzira.
Police said there were no signs of violence and the indications are that he died of natural causes, but they have not yet ruled out foul play or a drug overdose.
An autopsy is expected to be held today.
The man was noticed by passers-by slumped in his Fiat in Ponsonby Street in front of the Taormina Hotel at about 6.15 p.m.
District police, the CID and the drug squad are all involved in the investigations.
