The Malta Environment and Planning Authority yesterday began an extensive clean-up of the area in the limits of Mnjadra Temples, Qrendi.

The operation is the largest of its kind ever undertaken by MEPA.

It is expected to take two weeks to remove around 10,000 tons of building rubble and other material dumped illegally in this picturesque area of Malta.

In the early afternoon, soon after the MEPA officers left the site and all the trucks and equipment were removed, a van loaded with material which included tree branches arrived on the site, apparently intending to dump the material there.

The driver was caught red-handed by police officers who are surveilling the site throughout the operation. The truck was confiscated, the MEPA said.

The driver, a 21-year-old from Mqabba, is expected to be charged over the incident shortly, police said.
