Labour MP Anglu Farrugia asked the Home Affairs Minister in parliament yesterday whether he could confirm by how much overtime to the police had been reduced in 2001/2002 compared to 1996/1998.

The minister, Dr Tonio Borg, said policemen were paid Lm384,814 in 1996 and Lm276,954 in 1998. Payments rose to Lm441,157 in 2001 and Lm211,395 up to the end of May this year. That meant that overtime, rather than having gone down, had gone up by 59 per cent compared to 1998.

The minister said measures would continue to be taken to prevent overtime abuse.
