Malta snooker champion Simon Zammit obtained the required victory in the round robin group matches of the European Snooker Championship in Poland to top Group D and qualify for the next round of the competition.
Playing against dour Scotsman Robert Shanks, Zammit started on the wrong foot conceding the first frame. However, he recovered well and went on to win a tight match by the odd frame in seven potting his highest break so far, 71, in the sixth frame.
The top three players in the group finished their commitments on a par, conceding just one defeat. Zammit won the group on a better frame difference (+14) ahead of Irishman Kieran McMahon. The latter won his last match 4-2, to finish second (+13).
Denmark's Rune Kampe, who on Monday beat Zammit 4-3, was eliminated after finishing third with a frame difference of +12.
The second round gets underway tomorrow morning. The quarter-finals will also be played tomorrow, starting at 7 p.m.
