The 1952 Hamrun Eagles football team was recently reunited to celebrate the 50th anniversary since the founding of the club.

The reunion was organised by an ad hoc committee formed by three ex-players, Lawrence Dimech, Roland Magri and Paul Buttigieg.

It was no mean feat for the Hamrun Eagles to locate all the football players of that era. A significant number of the players had left Malta for good and took up residence abroad. Guests, in fact, flew over to Malta for the occasion from Australia, the US, Canada and the UK.

The Hamrun Eagles produced a significant number of good players for Malta. Lawrence Dimech, an ex-player who emigrated to Australia, founded the Eagles in his home town.

He is also the founder chairman of Parramatta Eagles, in Parramatta, Sydney, a region where there are hundreds of Maltese. This year, once again, they managed to end up as champions.

Mr Dimech contacted Hamrun Spartans officials to organise a football match exchange with Parramatta Eagles. The first match is envisaged to take place in June 2003, being the end of the football season in Malta, and the start of the season in Australia.

Details of whether the first match will be played in Malta or Australia are yet to be announced.

President Guido de Marco received the Hamrun Eagles contingent at The Palace in Valletta.
