President Guido de Marco yesterday made an official visit to Mosta, starting at the Mosta civic centre, which houses the council offices, the police station, a library and a health centre.
In his address to the mayor and councillors, President de Marco spoke on the importance of local councils in a democratic society.
"In this way, it is not only the government of the day that has to provide for the requirements of towns and villages, but by being closer to their respective citizens` daily needs, the local governments are giving a very valuable contribution.
"It is important to live close to the people of each and every locality and this was the concept leading to the creation of local councils."
Before leaving the civic centre, the President was presented with a selection of agricultural products by farmers from Mosta.
The President also visited the day care centre for the ederly, the rotunda church, Mosta Football Club, the St Mary and the Nicolò Isouard band clubs and the Carmela Sammut and the E.B. Vella Primary Schools.
In the course of his visit, the President was presented with a total of nearly Lm700 in aid of The Malta Community Chest Fund by Mosta local council, schools and clubs.
The President underlined the financial needs of the fund which offers a helping hand to individuals in need.
Yesterday`s was the fifth official visit to localities.
