Maurice Mizzi, of Birkirkara, a senior executive with the Water Services Corporation, is the winner of The Times wordgame which ended on May 11.
He will be going on a Mondial Travel Mediterranean Cruise and Costa Brava tour leaving Malta on September 28.
"The trip could not have come at a better time for me as I am due to retire from the public service in a few months` time after serving at the Water Works Department, more recently the WSC, for the past 41 years," Mr Mizzi said.
He yesterday received the ticket from Robert Suban, senior sales and marketing manager of Mondial Travel, which is sponsoring the prize, and immediately booked the same cruise and tour for his wife Mary... it will be like a second honeymoon for the Mizzi couple.
The prize includes a three-day (two night) Mediterranean cruise from Malta to Barcelona on the SS Oceanic, full board, with free on board entertainment and shows on the cruise liner, transfer from the Port of Barcelona to Lloret de Mar in Costa Brava, staying in a three-star hotel for six nights on bed and buffet breakfast basis (based on twin room sharing), transfer from Lloret de Mar to Barcelona airport and flight to Malta.
All taxes and service charges, optional excursions, drinks, entrance fees and gratuities are excluded, but the services of an experienced Mondial tour leader are included.
Apart from this Mr Mizzi has also won a Lm50 voucher to be spent at Malta International Airport duty free shop and a one year Scrabble Club subscription.
Mr Mizzi said he has already been to the Costa Brava but had never been on a cruise.
Mr Mizzi competes in the wordgame regularly, and although he has won crossword prizes before, this was the first time that he was lucky with the wordgame.
His hobbies include travelling, reading, doing crossword puzzles and stamp collection. He exercises himself by walking long distances, swimming and going ballroom dancing twice a week.
The six nine-letter words which won him the prize were: sensitise, volunteer, upholster, renouncer, foxhunter and retrieval.
The winner of the current series will receive a free place, courtesy of Mondial Holidays, on its Barcelona and Lourdes tour leaving Malta on July 13, returning on July 20.
The prize includes air tickets Malta-Girona, Lourdes-Malta, three nights accommodation in a three-star hotel in Lourdes on full board basis, and four nights accommodation in a three-star hotel in Barcelona on bed and breakfast basis (based on twin room sharing), all airport transfers and transfer by coach from Barcelona to Lourdes with a free stop in Andorra, and services of an experienced Mondial tour leader.
Taxes and service charges, optional excursions, drinks, entrance fees and gratuities are excluded.
The winner will also be given a free year`s subscription in the Scrabble Club, and a Lm50 voucher from the Tax Free Marketing Group to be spent at Malta International Airport`s tax free shops.
