As from this year, Malta will have its own Football Awards. The aim of the Malta Football Awards, the brainchild of sports journalists Sandro Micallef and Robert Cutajar, is to recognise the achievements of footballers, coaches and officials during the past season.
The presentation ceremony will be held at the Westin Dragonara on July 6. Ten categories, each containing five nominees, will be announced followed by presentation of each individual award. The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges, composed mainly of local soccer journalists, by means of a voting process.
The 10 categories are: best Maltese footballer, best foreign player, best striker, best midfielder, best defender, best goalkeeper, most promising youngster, best coach, best match official and biggest gaffe.
According to the organisers, several distinguished footballers, including some high-profile foreign players, are set to attend the gala evening.
It is believed that Manchester United stalwarts, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, currently on World Cup duty with England, have already been approached to make guest appearances at the presentation ceremony.
The Malta Football Awards will be officially launched on Monday.
