Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna yesterday launched plans for the setting up of an Institute for the Study and Documentation of Military Architecture.
The institute will be sited within spacious premises provided at Notre Dame Gate in Vittoriosa.
FWA executive director Mario Farrugia said the institute would promote a fuller appreciation of the art and science of military architecture and Malta`s unique military heritage, in order to bring it to the attention of a wider audience.
There will be three main stages to the project: the establishment of a permanent display on the hospitaller period of fortifications; the development of an audio-visual theatre for 50 to 60 visitors with computer-generated presentations on historical themes; and the development of a resource library.
The museum will also have a visitors` centre sited within the seven kilometre-long historic ramparts of Cottonera, where a heritage walk will be created for the enjoyment of the public.
Stephen Spiteri, superintendent of fortifications within the Works Division, will be the first director of the institute.
