Fundamental rights

The EU officially declared its Charter of Fundamental Rights in December 2000. This Charter is still of a declaratory nature and is therefore not binding on member states. However, at a European level, some member states are of the strong opinion that this should be the basis of a constitution for the EU. It aims to put together into a single text all the personal, civil, political, economic and social rights that are guaranteed to a European citizen.

Malta is a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights and enjoys a good reputation as to its human rights record.
