Archaeological group calls for conservation

The Maltese Archaeological Group said the Ghajn Damma rubbish dump in Gozo had already claimed a megalithic site and now was threatening prehistoric pits in the area.

At Maghtab, the site containing a group of classical burials continued to remain used as a rubbish dump despite proposed projects to rehabilitate the site over the past decade.

The group said it was particularly worrying that despite the location of the tomb that contained the Hannibal bin Harmelek inscription and other tombs described in the late nineteenth century remained unknown, extensive intervention on the landscape was proposed for Benghajsa.

Furthermore, a Roman site containing a stretch of sizable ashlar blocks and a twentieth century pillbox lay within the area proposed for use as a landfill.

The group recommended appropriate conservation of such sites.
