As the golf end-of-season approaches, the Royal Malta Golf Club (RMGC) tends to become a hive of activity as golfers try their best to gather Lacoste Order of Merit points.
The May Monthly Medal saw a 100 golfers competing in the three respective competitions. As his term of office approaches its end, the club`s Captain, Paul Stoner, seems to be relaxing more often - so much so that his performance in the First Division earned him first place with a net 66.
Robert Savic also managed a similar score, albeit with a worse back nine for second place.
The Second Division was won by Jack Grieve with a net 65. He was followed by Michael Biggs with a net 66. Joe Sullivan won the Third Division with a magnificent net 59; seven shots clear of Michael Abele.
Horton Cup
Another medal competition but with a handicap limit of 18, the Horton Cup, usually favours the First Division players. Warren Alcock played just two over the par of the course with a gross 70 (net 65).
Considering the windy conditions Alcock`s play was by all standards a true round of golf.
David Debono also played extremely well on the day - three under his handicap. Gross 79 for a net 65, earned Debono not just a tie with Alcock but also the achievement of being declared winner for the day on the basis of a better back nine.
Skanska vs The Rest
The Swedes came to Malta to build a hospital foremost and to play golf in their leisure time. They threw the gauntlet recently and invited the other non-Skanska RMGC members to a duel on the golf course.
Maltese, English, German and Irish members joined in the team constituting The Rest who won 645 points to Skanska`s 629.
The best scorer for the Swedes was Henrik Hellstenius while Robert Aylen was the best for The Rest.
Lacoste competition
One of the highlights of the ladies` golf calendar is the Lacoste Stableford. This year 25 players competed and first place was closely contested.
Olga Proell (11 handicap) was the overall leader with a creditable 37 points.
Close behind was Greeba Jones (33 handicap) with 36 points, and Christine Held with 35 points.
