Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja was given a glowing review by the Sunday Telegraph opera critic Michael Kennedy for his performance in Rigoletto.

Verdi`s opera is being produced at the New Theatre in Cardiff by the Welsh National Opera.

"... he would still have held the stage because of his lyrical, unforced and totally secure singing. Never for a moment did one fear that he might betray some strain in any register; it was an admirable performance," Kennedy wrote of Calleja`s interpretation of his role as the Duke.

Born at Attard in 1978, Mr Calleja started singing under the tutelage of Maltese tenor Paul Asciak at the age of 16.
