Need for serious environmental law

Zejtun council said yesterday a landfill in Birzebbuga would be detrimental to the town and its surroundings.

It said that moving the landfill to a new site would only move the problem, especially when very little effort was being made to reduce the generation of waste or to recycle waste.

The country needed serious environmental legislation which would stop the use of products that were damaging the environment.

This should be accompanied by an educational campaign, it said.

Floriana council also expressed its support for the Birzebbuga council, saying that putting a landfill in Benghajsa, as was being proposed, would cause problems for the locality.
