The Valletta Rehabilitation Project is sponsoring a lecture on Caravaggio in London.

The lecture, `Frater Michael Angelus in tumultu: Caravaggio`s imprisonment and other new reflections on Caravaggio`s Malta`, is being given by Dr Keith Sciberras from the University of Malta at the prestigious Courtauld Institute of Art on Tuesday.

The lecture will focus on the important discovery of documents relating to the cause of Caravaggio`s imprisonment in Malta, as well as why he suddenly lost favour with his protectors within the Order of St John.

The cause of the artist`s imprisonment has baffled historians and scholars since the 17th century, generating speculation and a variety of theories.

New insights on Caravaggio`s Malta are also being advanced such as why he came here; the identity of those who helped him acquaint himself with the Order in Naples; and new dates for two of his paintings.

An agreement on the lecture was reached during a recent meeting between VRP`s executive coordinator Ray Bondin and the director of the Wall Painting Department of the Courtauld, David Park. The meeting in London also discussed future joint projects.

The Courtauld is in agreement with VRP over the restoration of the Paladini frescoes at the President`s Palace, in Valletta.
