Malta has joined the International Council of Museums - ICOM, at which 108 countries are represented.
Created in 1946, ICOM is a non-governmental organisation maintaining formal relations with UNESCO and having a consultative status with the United Nations` Economic and Social Council.
It is dedicated to the development of museums and operates globally for the preservation of cultural heritage.
The Malta national committee is headed by Ms Theresa M. Vella of the National Museum of Fine Arts, who is chairman. The other members are: vice chairman, Marquis Nicholas de Piro (Casa Rocca Piccola); secretary-general, Dr Claude Busuttil (Restoration Consultant); treasurer, Joseph Galea Naudi (St John`s Museum) and Mgr John Azzopardi (Cathedral Museum), Ms Suzannah Depasquale (National Museum of Archaeology), Charles Farrugia (National Archives) and Mr Joseph Schiro` (Malta Centre for Restoration).
A public event to commemorate World Museums Day and the launching of ICOM in Malta will be held at St James Cavalier next Saturday at 10 a.m.
