There are 32 pending trials by jury, Justice Minister Austin Gatt said in reply to a parliamentary question yesterday. The longest pending case goes back 12 years and has been kept pending because of a constitutional case.

Dr Gatt told Mr Carmelo Abela (MLP) that five of the pending trials involved homicide, five involved attempted homicide, 12 were over drug possession or trafficking, seven involved theft and three involved other charges.

Five trials have been concluded so far this year and another is in progress.
