It was encouraging to read that Education Minister Louis Galea spoke out against animal cruelty at the poultry and pigeon exhibition at San Anton (April 28). Yet, the irony of it all lies in the fact that the accompanying picture of this report showed poultry being kept in small cages in the sun.

Unfortunately, our society seems to limit animal cruelty issues to domestic animals while the often appalling conditions in which animals are bred are often overlooked.

Millions of animals are slaughtered locally each year, often after having lived miserable lives in a most unnatural way.

Hopefully, the increase in awareness will also lead to some thoughts being spared for these animals and greater efforts will be placed at least into improving their conditions and the way in which they are treated.

On a positive note, it is good to know that the subject of animal rights is going to be given more coverage in our schools.
