Msida St Joseph 2
Senglea Athletics 1

A late goal scored by Division Two top-scorer Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza gave Msida St Joseph three vital points at the expense of promotion seekers Senglea and assured the Saints of promotion next season.

To round up a fine weekend for the Saints, Tarxien Rainbows, the other contenders for promotion, then lost their match against Gzira United and Msida were also crowned Division Two champions.

After just six minutes Msida`s Callus hit the post from a corner-kick and on 25 minutes an El Khiate effort was saved by Elvin Attard. Three minutes before the break Msida were again close but Attard was well positioned to stop Mifsud Triganza`s effort.

Seven minutes after the restart Senglea stunned the leaders after taking the lead through Frans Dingli from a free-kick. But in the 66th minute Msida drew level when a Kevin Montanaro first-timer gave the Senglea `keeper no chance.

Senglea could have snatched a late winner but Trevor Thomas and John Fsadni fluffed their chances.

When all seemed destined to a draw, Mifsud Triganza banged home a 95th minute free-kick from outside the Senglea box to send the numerous Saints fans into ruptures of joy.

Sta Venera Lightnings 0
Mellieha 0

This was a drab match during which both teams rarely, if ever, created any goal scoring chances.

Sta Venera failed to gain important points in their effort to maintain their status and are still hovering dangerously just above the drop zone.

Gzira United 1
Tarxien Rainbows 0

A goal scored by substitute Omar Zammit produced a surprise victory for Gzira United at the expense of promotion hopefuls Tarxien Rainbows who continue to share the runners-up position with Senglea. These two teams still have to face each other in the last match of the season - a true promotion decider.

After just six minutes Gzira, now in a better position outside the relegation zone, hit the post through a shot by Malcolm Sultana. The second period produced better football and in the 53rd minute Tarxien keeper Curmi effected an excellent save to deny Matthew Cocks.

Then it was the turn of Gzira custodian Martin Mizzi to make difficult saves to stop Leslie Burke and Brian Testaferrata. But, nine minutes from time the Maroons scored the winning goal through Omar Zammit whose shot took a deflection on its way home.

Zurrieq 3
Attard 0

Attard`s relegation worries continued to increase when they were soundly beaten by Zurrieq for whom Aldrin Muscat scored two goals.

Zurrieq broke the deadlock after 17 minutes when Darren Bellizzi`s shot hit the crossbar and Godfrey Chetcuti headed in from the rebound.

A minute into the second period Zurrieq defender Bellizzi cleared off the line to stop Mariano Muscat`s low shot whereas in the 60th minute Muscat wasted an easy chance.

In the 70th minute Attard`s striker Kevin Naudi was sent off for a second caution with Zurrieq making it 2-0 in the 77th minute thanks to a Muscat goal. Two minutes later Zurrieq`s Francis Cassar was shown the red card and deep into stoppage time Muscat added on a third goal for the Reds in a swift counter-attack.

Mgarr 1

Birzebbuga became the fourth team to make it to the play-offs. Birzebbuga assumed the initiative but it was Mgarr who scored first in the 60th minute thanks to a Rupert Pace goal.

Mgarr`s joy was short-lived though as immediately after Noel Tabone headed in from a corner to make it one-all. From then onwards Birzebbuga dominated proceedings, going on to notch two other goals from Paul Camilleri and Neville Farrugia.

Sirens 3
Kirkop United 1

Two late goals from substitutes Patrick Zammit and Mario Gauci were decisive for Sirens as they defeated Kirkop to qualify for the play-offs.

Gradually Sirens took the initiative and went close on various occasions, especially through Adrian Galea. He was unlucky in the 33rd minute when his shot bounced off the bar but in the 41st minute Galea put Sirens ahead when he finished off a good move by Ramon Farrugia.

In the 56th minute Mario Cilia hit an unexpected equaliser for Kirkop as Sirens increased the pressure. But they had to wait until the added time to secure the points thanks to goals from Zammit and Gauci.

Fgura United 1
Gudja United 0

This was a typical end of season match which proved to be monotonous throughout the 90 minutes.
