MP Francis Agius has presented a report on sustainable fishing at the Council of Europe`s plenary session. Thirty million people worldwide are connected to the fishing industry and about 17 per cent of our protein needs come from fish, a figure set to double by 2025, the report said.

It warned that uncontrolled fishing threatened the species and the seas.

It also urged CoE member states to honour all Food and Agriculture Organisation agreements on conservation and managment of fish species, develop interernational cooperation and strengthen the European Union`s Common Fisheries Policy reform.
