I refer to the letter "EU - a growing family" by Dr Caroline Jackson MEP (April 24) about her recent visit to Malta on behalf of the environment committee of the European Parliament.
Dr Jackson writes: "(Our visit) was therefore financed by the European Parliament as a normal part of our parliamentary duties and not, as Dr Alfred Sant suggests in The Malta Independent, by any Maltese pro-EU body".
For the record, Leader of the Opposition Alfred Sant did not, in Dr Jackson`s case, state or even suggest that her visit was funded in the way she alleges. He said that her visit forms part of an ongoing pattern by which pro-EU membership propaganda is being drummed into the minds of people.
Dr Sant remarked that Dr Jackson visited Malta for a few hours. A delegation from the Malta Labour Party led by deputy leader George Vella discovered that she was singularly ill-informed about the Maltese political and economic background, as well as about the implications of EU rules and policies on Malta. Nor did she demonstrate much interest in understanding what the MLP`s European policy consists of.
Yet, at the end of her very short stay, Dr Jackson considered herself competent to deliver a judgement in apocalyptic and demagogic terms about the option that should best suit Malta`s future in the island`s relations with the EU. End of story.
