A total of 415 students under the age of 16 years were given exemptions not to attend school in 2000-2001, Education Minister Louis Galea said in parliament.

Data given by the minister shows that between 1995 and 2001, a total of 2,141 students - 1,303 girls and 838 boys - were exempted from attending school.

Answering a question by Francis Agius (PN), Dr Galea said the main reasons for such exemptions were either to allow the child to work or for humanitarian, social, psycho-social and family reasons.
